PANAMA

Panama is a Central American country that has been used as passage way since the discovery of the Pacific Ocean in 1513 by Vasco Nunez de Balboa.   During colonial times, Panama was the place for departure of all Spanish expeditions, as well as passage way for all the gold and treasures from the Incan Empire.

Afterwards, in the 1800īs as the Trans-isthmian railroad was constructed, all sorts of goods traveled through the isthmus. Finally, in 1914 with the completion by the United States of one of engineering’s greatest feats, the Panama Canal, Panama acquired international relevance and importance by becoming the route of preference of all commercial goods that needed to be shipped from the Atlantic to the Pacific and vice versa.

Nowadays, the U.S. is in the process of transferring the administration of the Panama Canal to the Panamanian government, a process that is to be completed by January 1, 2000 in accordance with the Torrijos-Carter Treaty.

Because of Panama’s privileged geographical position, it’s inhabitants enjoy all modern amenities and have been enriched culturally by all who have traveled through the isthmus, unlike most central American countries.  However, there is a portion of Panama's population that has had very little, if any, contact with outsiders, these group lives in the Darien province, where ATLAPAC Expedition takes place.
